Impressionist Seascape - Antique Oil Painting

Superb framed and signed seascape Signed oil on panel of a winter landscape with a river and boat and has a lovely tonal quality. The painting is mounted in a quality wooden gilt frame and signed Van Damme - possibly Frans Van Damme (1858 - 1925). The painting dates from the late 19th century/eartly 20th century

Van Damme, returned to Waasmunster from Brussels and Antwerp in 1884, where he trained at the Academy of St. Nicholas. He exhibited from 1903 in Paris, returning to Brussels in 1915. He mainly painted marines, fishermen, views of the Scheldt, harbour and coastal views, as well as landscapes.

He was known for his energetic brushstrokes, grey tones and a generous palette. He taught at the Academies of Antwerp and Brussels. Participated in the "35th Exhibition" at the Ghent Casino in 1892 on the occasion of the Centenary of the "Royal Society for the Encouragement of the Fine Arts of Ghent", at the "Universal and International Exhibition of Brussels" in 1910 , at the "First Christmas Salon" in Laeken in 1912, in Dendermonde in 1923.
