Donkey in a Landscape - 19th Century Oil Painting

Framed 19th century oil on canvas by the Belgium artist Louis Robbe (1806-1887). The painting is signed and mounted in a 19th century gilt frame. There is also a wax seal on the rear of the painting.

Louis Robbe was an animal painter and engraver and was known for his paintings of animals, landscapes and animals in a landscape. He studied at the 'Academie de Courtrai but was a lawyer by profession but after 1833 he started to paint more seriously. He was influenced by JB de Jonge and E Verboeckhoven. Robbe had his first exhibition in Ghent in 1835 and had a particularly successful large exhibition in Brussels in 1884. Later, Robbe applied himself to the study of landscapes but ill health prevented him developing over the last twenty years of his life. He has works in several museums including, Brussels, Antwerp , Bruges, Tornai, Liile, Moscow, Washington, Liege.
