Barge on a Canal - Antique Oil Painting

Signed oil on canvas by the well listed artist Armand Apol - Belgium school. The painting is in mounted in a stunning gilt moulded wooden frame and slip of the period with lovely leaf detail. The painting shows a barge on a canal and dates from around 1920.

Armand Apol ( Brussels 1879 - 1950) was painter and engraver of Belgian nationality. He mainly painted landscapes and seascapes and was particularly well known for his river scenes and canals. He was a student of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Brussels (1891-1901) at Constant Montald .

From 1901 he participated in the events of the group Sillon in Brussels and also spent a period in Switzerland. His painting is characterised by a tendency to figuration, evolving towards luminism. He was also strongly influenced by fauvism.
