Boats in a Port - Belgium School

Superb post-impressionist oil painting (oil on board) by the well listed Belgium artist Victor le Clercq (1896-1944). The signed painting shows boats in a port - probably Northern France or Belgium. It is mounted in a simple wooden frame an is in excellent condition.

Victor le Clercq enrolled at the Royal Acadamy of Fine Arts, Brussels in 1913, He held two exhibitions in his lifetime - one in 1925 and the other in 1929. He married the artist Nelly Fernande Guiche in 1929. From 1940, during the invasion of Belgium he and his wife protected many Jewish children and in 1943 he was arrested an imprisoned in St Gilles and then later transported to Essen in Germany. After many transfers he was finally imprisoned at Bergen - Belsen. It is thought he died of exhaustion.
He has several works in museums including:
- Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Belgium
- Museum of Fine Arts of Mons, Charleroi and Verviers
His work was more recently exhibited in 1993 at the Gallery of Municipal Credit.
