Henry Schouten showed early talent s a painter and enrolled at the Brussels academy in 1876. He studied under the great animal painter Alfred Verwee. As an artist he rarely found it necessary to exhibit due to the popularity and demand for his paintings. However, he did participate in a major exhibition in Brussels in 1882.
