French Seascape - The Fisherman

Luminous seascape by the French artist Louis Bissinger born in Lyon in 1899 and died in Rillieux-la-Pape in 1978. Louis Bessinger began his passion for painting in 1923 and often signed his paintings Bernard Regis. He was arrested by the Gestapo in 1943 for helping the French Resistance and was deported to Germany. He spent years in Buchenwald where he painted scenes from the concentration camp, which where later exhibited.

After liberation he returned to Lyon and then to the mountains of the Dauphine region and in 1954 he won first prize at the Grenoble Art Exhibition. Soon after the French Government bought a large collection of his paintings. His work became regularly exhibited at the Galerie Royale in Paris.
The painting probably dates from around 1950.


The oil on carton/board is mounted in a simple gold frame and is in excellent condition.
