Horses in a Stall - 19th Century Oil Painting

19th century oil wooden panel by the French artist Alfred Sainte-Marie (1825-1890). The painting shows two horses resting in a stall and a dog. The panel is mounted in its original 19th century frame and is signed in black in the bottom left hand corner. The painting is typical of the artists work.

Alfred Sainte-Marie was born and brought up in Paris and was a pupil of Louis Roux. He was well known fois he painting genre scenes, animals, hunting scenes and landscapes usually in oil. He had a precise technique and style.

He regularly exhibited at the Paris Salon between 1853 and 1870 and has paintings in private collections and commands high prices. His work was sought after as hunting and hounds were an important part of French society.

The painting has been recently cleaned and recently varnished.
