Stunning portrait of a young French or possibly Algerian woman attributed to the famous French artist Gustave Guillaumet 1840-1887 (noted at the rear of the painting).
Gustave Guilluamet is a reknown French artist famous for his paintings of Northern Africa. He has several works in the Musee d'Orsay, Paris, The National Gallery and several other museums around the world.
In 1957 he joined the Ecole Nationale Superieure de Beaux Arts, Paris and in 1868 exhibited at the Salon de Paris with considerable success. He spent a great deal of time in Northern Africa and has painted some beautiful and evocative paintings of the region. Guillaumet was made a Knight of the Legion of Honour, the highest decoration in France.
The oil on canvas has been remounted on a panel an is in a good quality wooden frame which works very well with the subject. It is painted with great finesse.
The painting and frame are I good condition but it does have a small restoration in the background on the top left corner.
