Tuscan Landscape - Danish School

Superb oil on canvas by the impressionist painter Viggo Johansen (1851-1935) showing a sketch of a Tuscan landscape with a house and cypress trees. The painting is signed buy the artist and his studio stamp is on the rear of the canvas.

Viggo Johansen was one of Denmarks' most prominent painters in the 1890's. He was a member of the Skagen group of painters that used to meet every Summer.
Johansen studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1868 to 1875, specialising in figure painting but did not pass his graduation examination. He first became associated with the Skagen group in 1875. From 1885 he exhibited in Paris where he was inspires by Claude Monet, particularly in his use of colour which can be seen in the painting Chrstian Bindslev er Syg.
After his return fro Paris his paintings were noted for the absence of black.
Johansen is remembered particularly for the subdued lighting effects of his interiors. From 1888 to 1906 he taught at the Artists Academy School for Women and later became a professor there until 1920 as well as for a time one of the directors.
The painting is probably a working sketch is signed and framed in a simple wooden gilt frame. Both the frame and canvas are in excellent condition.
